Hydraulic Cylinder Repairs in Toowoomba: Reseal, Rebuild or Replace?

A leaking hydraulic cylinder can bring your whole operation to a standstill. Whether it's a tractor mid-paddock, an excavator on a civil site, or a tipper truck that won't tip — when your hydraulics fail, work stops.

The good news is that in most cases, a failed or leaking hydraulic cylinder doesn't need to be replaced outright. Understanding your options can save you significant time and money — and get you back to work faster.

Here's what you need to know.

What actually goes wrong with a hydraulic cylinder?

Hydraulic cylinders are robust pieces of equipment, but they do wear over time. The most common failures are:

  • Seal failure — The most common issue. Seals degrade with age, heat cycles, and use — leading to external leaks or internal bypass (where fluid bypasses the piston seal, causing slow or weak cylinder movement).

  • Rod damage — Pitting, scoring, or bending of the cylinder rod — often caused by side-loading, impact damage, or a failing wiper seal letting contaminants in.

  • Bore scoring — Damage to the inside of the cylinder barrel, usually caused by contaminated hydraulic fluid or a catastrophic seal failure.

  • End cap or port damage — Less common, but end cap threads can strip or port fittings can corrode or crack.

Most hydraulic failures start small. A weeping seal that's left unchecked will eventually fail completely — usually at the worst possible time.

Reseal, rebuild, or replace — how do you know which one you need?

This is the most common question we get, and the answer depends on the condition of the cylinder components.

Reseal

A reseal is the right option when the cylinder rod and barrel are in good condition — no scoring, no bending — but the seals have worn or failed. We remove the old seals, inspect all components, and install a fresh seal kit. It's the most cost-effective repair and often takes just a few hours.

This covers the majority of hydraulic cylinder jobs we see.

Full Rebuild

When the rod is damaged, the bore is scored, or there's more significant internal wear, a full rebuild is the better path. We strip the cylinder completely, repair or replace damaged components, and reassemble to specification. It's more involved than a reseal but still far more cost-effective than a new cylinder.

Replacement

In some cases — particularly older equipment with heavily damaged or corroded cylinders — replacement is the most practical option. We'll always tell you honestly which approach makes the most sense for your situation before any work begins.

We come to you — mobile hydraulic repairs across the Darling Downs

For large agricultural and earthmoving equipment, transporting machinery to a workshop isn't always practical. SMITH Diesel Fitting offers mobile on-site hydraulic cylinder repairs across Toowoomba, the Darling Downs, Lockyer Valley, and Western Downs.

Our service vehicle carries a wide range of seal kits for common ag, earthmoving, and transport equipment brands — so we can often complete the job on the spot, without waiting days for parts.

We carry seal kits for John Deere, CASE IH, New Holland, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, and many more. If we don't have the kit on the truck, we'll source it fast.

What equipment do we service?

We repair hydraulic cylinders across a wide range of machinery, including:

  • Agricultural equipment — tractors, harvesters, headers, hay machinery, seeders and sprayers

  • Earthmoving equipment — excavators, bulldozers, graders, backhoe loaders and skid steers

  • Road transport — tipper trucks, dog trailers and semi-trailers with hydraulic tipping systems

  • Telehandlers and front end loaders

  • Grain and materials handling equipment

If your machinery has a hydraulic system that's playing up, get in touch — we'll let you know if we can help.

Don't wait for a complete failure

A slow leak or a cylinder that's lost some of its strength is easy to put off — until it fails completely at the worst possible time. Hydraulic issues that are caught early are almost always quicker and cheaper to fix.

If you've noticed a leak, slow movement, or inconsistent pressure in any of your hydraulic cylinders, it's worth getting it assessed sooner rather than later.
